SF Sheriff’s lieutenant back in the slammer

SF Sheriff’s Lt. Vince Calvarese is back behind bars for probation violation.

A San Francisco Sheriff’s lieutenant is back behind bars — this time, we’re told, for failing to show up for his domestic violence counseling and a scheduled court appearance.

Vincent Calvarese, 49, pled no contest to misdemeanor false imprisonment back in May after he allegedly pushed and punched a man he had dated inside the locker room at the former Gold’s Gym on Market Street in the Castro.

Calvarese, who was off duty at the time of the incident, was placed on three years probation and ordered to undergo domestic violence counseling. But he had been allowed to return to work at the sheriff’s department, officials say.

However, after he allegedly failed to show up for at least a couple of his counseling sessions and a scheduled court appearance on Wednesday, his probation officer asked the judge hearing his case to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. His work status has also been unclear as of late.

Sheriff’s officials would only confirm that Calvarese was taken into custody by deputies Wednesday on 17th Street, and booked into County Jail on $75,000 bail.

Late Thursday, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kelly ordered an evaluation of the defendant, who is scheduled to appear in court on Monday for the probation violation.

He could face up to a year in jail if convicted.

Attorney Judy Odbert, who represents Calaverse as a member of the Sheriff’s Managers and Supervisors Association and had handled his original criminal case, said she had not been officially retained to deal with the lieutenant’s current legal problems and declined comment.

Calvarese was featured in a 2009 documentary about gay culture called “The Butch Factor” and has worked on a number of political campaigns, most recently playing a prominent role in fellow Lt. Paul Miyamoto’s bid for sheriff, a post he lost to former Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi.

Sheriff Mirkarimi, like Calvarese, faced domestic violence charges. Mirkarimi pleaded guilty to a false imprisonment charge — his stemming from an infamous New Year’s Eve altercation with his wife, Eliana Lopez that prompted Mayor Ed Lee to suspend him and seek his removal.
